Jamia Millia Islamia, which is the one of the premier educational institutes and one of the central universities of India, was established in 1920, in Aligarh at United Province in Pre- Independent India. The very basic and inherent wave that led to the establishment of Jamia Millia Islamia University was according to historical evidences bred up from the theological mix up of anti-colonial Islamic activism, radical section of western educated Indian Muslim and Gandhian thoughts. On November 22nd 1920, Hakim Ajmal Khan became the first chancellor of Jamia and Mohammed Ali Jauhar was the first Vice Chancellor of the University.

However, in the period of political conflicts in the pre- independence India and Involvement of Jamia Millia in it eventually led to the transfer of the University from Aligarh to Karol Bagh, in New Delhi in 1925. After the constant progress in field of learning and education on March 1st 1935, the University was founded at Okhla in the southern outskirts of Delhi. In 1936, all the institutions of Jamia University except Jamia Press, the Maktaba and the library were shifted to the new campus at Okhla.

After the Independence in 1962, the University Grants Commission gave Jamia status of Deemed University. In 1988, by a special act of parliament, Jamia Millia Islamia was given the status of Central University and thus become one of the prominent universities in Delhi and India.
